Loyola volleyball goes 0-2 on day one of the UST Labor Day Tournament

Wolf Pack return to action tomorrow against St. Thomas (11:00 a.m.) and St. Gregory's (5:00 p.m.).

 

The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team traveled to Houston today to take part in day one of the UST Labor Day Tournament hosted by the University of St. Thomas (TX).  The Wolf Pack went 0-2 on the day, dropping a heartbreaker to Dillard University 2-3 (25-18,19-25,25-15,21-25,14-16) in match one, before falling 0-3 (15-25,14-25,15-25) against Southwestern Christian (TX) in the nightcap.

With the losses, Loyola drops to 4-7 on the year heading into its two matches in Houston tomorrow.

 

Match One: Dillard 3 – Loyola 2

This battle between these two squads out of the Crescent City proved competitive as always, with the match taking five sets to determine the winner. Despite jumping out to a four-point lead in the final set, Loyola fell in the last frame 14-16 to drop the match 3-2 to the Bleu Devils.

The first match on Saturday afternoon saw three members of the Wolf Pack set career highs led by a freshman standout. Newcomer Malea Howie (FR/Greenwood, Ind.) paced the Loyola offense with a career-high 17 kills, while Katie Philippi (SR/Metairie, La.) (19 digs) and Maddie Huekels (SO/Dyer, In.) (28 assists) each put up career numbers in the loss. Allison Hartmann (SO/Slidell, La.) added 16 kills against the Bleu Devils and Huekels collected yet another double-double as she matched 14 digs with her 28 helpers.

The Wolf Pack tallied with 55 kills against 35 errors on 149 total attacks to wrap up match one with a .131 hitting percentage.

Dillard's Shelby Stewart led all players with 28 kills in the victory, while Ma-Kayla Johnson handed out a game-high 29 assists in match one.

 

Match Two: Southwestern Christian 3 – Loyola 0

The Eagles proved to be the dominant team in Loyola's second match, besting the Wolf Pack in nearly all statistical categories.  Loyola struggled hitting the ball in its second contest of the day, finishing each match with a negative hitting percentage en route to a three-set -0.105 total.

Hartmann led the Loyola attack with six kills on 14 total attacks (.357) and Huekels paced the offense with 11 assists. Philippi led the Wolf Pack in digs for the second-straight match with nine, while Anna Katherine Brunini (SO/Madison, Miss.) chipped in eight digs in the loss.

Hannah Priscila was tops on the Eagles with 12 kills and Courtney Traylor handed out a game-high 32 assists in match two.

 

The Wolf Pack return to the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center tomorrow, September 4, to square off against St. Thomas at 11:00 a.m. before taking on St. Gregory's (OK) at 5:00 p.m.
