Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, the Loyola University New Orleans Baseball team welcomed DI Southern University to town for a special game at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
Despite a great game by Jordan Wilson, the Wolf Pack fell to the Jaguars 4-3 on Thursday evening.
With the loss, its fourth-straight, Loyola drops to 16-19 on the year. Conversely, Southern University improves to 7-11 following the victory.
Wilson tied a season high with three hits to go along with a game-high three RBI. At the two spot, Rawlings Elam (SO/Houston, Tx.) collected a game-high four hits and added the other Wolf Pack RBI. Luis Anguizola (JR/David, Chiriqui, Panama) tallied two hits on Thursday, while Joseph Kuchler (SO/Metairie, La.) chipped in one hit and two walks in the loss.
On the mound, Jordan Green (JR/Shreveport, La.) drops to 3-5 on the year after allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits in 3.0 innings pitched.
Southern took the lead early at Wesley Barrow, tacking on two runs in the top of the first to go up 2-0.
Following a fly out, Elam landed Loyola's first baserunner of the evening after connecting on a single. Elam advanced on a wild pitch, before Anguizola singled down the third-base line. With two outs, Wilson smacked a double to left-center to score both Elam and Anguizola to knot the game at 2-2 after one inning.
Neither team was able to manufacture a run in the second and the score stayed 2-2 entering the third.
Elam led off the third with a single and then stole second. Following two flyouts, Wilson recorded his second-straight double of the evening to score Elam from second and put the home team up 3-2.
The Jaguars retook the lead over the next three innings, putting up three runs to grab the 5-3 advantage entering the eighth.
In the eighth inning, Southern managed to load the bases but were unable to capitalized and the score remained 5-3.
Lorenzo led off the bottom of the eighth with a single but that would be the only hit for the Wolf Pack in the inning, keeping the game at 5-3 entering the frame.
Southern was unable to land any baserunners in the ninth to give Loyola one more shot to claim the victory in the home half on the inning.
With one out, Kuchler reached on a walk and then advanced to second thanks to a wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Elam singled to center to drive in Kuchler and cut the deficit to just one with two outs. Facing a full count with the tying run on first, Anguizola grounded out to the third baseman to give the Jaguars to 5-4 win.
Loyola will travel to take on Blue Mountain College on March 25-26 for a three-game series. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
