Loyola baseball survives 14-11 slugfest against Brewton-Parker on Sunday

Wolf Pack record a season-high 19 hits against the Barons. Loyola returns to Segnette Field tomorrow to take on Eureka College at 6:00 p.m.

Eyeing another Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) victory, the Loyola University New Orleans Baseball team welcomed Brewton-Parker College back to Segnette Field on Sunday to cap off their three-game series.

In a game that saw both teams combine for 34 hits, the Wolf Pack survived the slugfest to claim the 14-11 win to take the 2-1 series victory over the Barons.

Loyola's 19 hits against the Barons are the most for the Wolf Pack this season.

With the win, Loyola improves to 14-14 on the year and 2-4 in the SSAC. On the flip side, Brewton-Parker drops to 4-24 overall and 1-5 in conference play with the loss.

Luis Anguizola (JR/David, Chiriqui, Panama) continued his hot streak on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.  In the past four games, Anguizola is an unbelievable 11-for-14 with nine runs, six doubles, one triple, a homer and 10 RBI.

Daniel Pappas (SR/Chicago, Ill.) also collected three RBI against the Barons, while Spencer Rosenbohm (SO/Daphne, Ala.) added three hits, two RBI and a team-high three runs.  Alexander Lorenzo (JR/Miami, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Jordan Wilson (SO/San Francisco, Ca. ) chipped in two runs to go along with two RBI in the victory.

Joseph Kuchler (SO/Metairie, La.) (1-2) got the victory after allowing nine hits and five runs (all earned) to go along with one strikeout in six innings pitched.

With the score 0-0 in the bottom of the first, Blake Toscano (JR/Metairie, La.) led off the inning with a single to short. Spencer Rosenbohm followed with a single to advance Toscano to third to give the Wolf Pack two men on with no outs. Anguizola stepped in and connected on a double to score Toscano and put Loyola up 1-0.  Lorenzo sent a shot down the leftfield line to score both Rosenbohm and Anguizola to put the home team up 3-0 after one inning of action.

Up 3-0 in the third, Loyola tacked on five more runs to take the commanding 8-0 lead thanks to RBI from Anguizola, Lorenzo, Jordan, Wilson and Pappas.

Up 8-0, the Wolf Pack kept pouring it on in the fifth, putting up four runs to stretch the advantage to 12-0 at Segnette Field.

Trailing 12-7, Brewton-Parker exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-7.

The Barons added one more run in the top of the seventh to get it within four at 12-8.

Needing to add some insurance runs on in the bottom of the seventh, Loyola responded by putting up two runs on the board with two outs to push the advantage to 14-8.

With one out in the ninth, Brewton-Parker connected on a two-run home run to bring the score to 14-10. The Barons managed to add one more run in the inning but it would not be enough, as two groundouts ended Brewton-Parker's comeback on Sunday.

Loyola returns to Segnette Field tomorrow, March 14, to take on Eureka College in a single game at 6:00 p.m.
