Loyola baseball splits with Brewton-Parker on Saturday

Wolf Pack are now 13-14 on the year and 1-4 in the SSAC. Loyola will cap off the three-game series with the Barons tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. from Segnette Field.

Looking to win their first Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) game, the Loyola University New Orleans Baseball team welcomed Brewton-Parker College to Segnette Field for a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Wolf Pack earned a split with the Barons, taking game one 9-1 before dropping the second game 8-3.

Following Saturday's action, Loyola is 13-14 on the year and 1-4 in league action. Conversely, Brewton-Parker, who snapped a 17-game losing steak, goes to 4-23 overall and 1-4 in the SSAC.

Game One: Loyola 8, Brewton-Parker 1

The Wolf Pack displayed their power in game one, with Luis Anguizola (JR/David, Chiriqui, Panama) and Alexander Lorenzo (JR/Miami, Fla.) both notching home runs. Lorenzo added two hits and three RBI, while Anguizola tallied a game-high four runs to go along with two RBI.  In the five spot, Jordan Wilson (SO/San Francisco, Ca. ) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Ben Condara added the other RBI to go along with one run in the victory.

On the mound, Kevin Lindsey (SR/Baton Rouge, La.) (4-2) got the complete-game victory after allowing six hits and one run (unearned), while striking out five and not giving up a walk.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Anguizola landed Loyola's first baserunner following a walk. Lorenzo followed with a single to give the Wolf Pack two men on with two outs. Wilson then connected on a single to score Anguizola from third and put Loyola up 1-0 after one inning of action.

The score remained 1-0 until Brewton-Parker managed to manufacture a run in the top of the third to knot the game at 1-1.

Anguizola stepped in the box and sent his fifth homer of the season over the leftfield wall put the home team up 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Following the home run, Loyola landed two baserunners on following back-to-back bunts. With two men on and no outs, Ben Condara sent a single to centerfield to score Lorenzo and bring the score to 3-1.  Peyton Senner (JR/New Orleans, La.) followed with a liner to centerfield scoring Condara from third to extend the advantage to 4-1 heading in the top of the fourth.

Loyola kept the momentum rolling in the bottom of the fourth, adding three more runs to stretch the advantage to 7-1 after four inning.

The score stayed at 7-1 until the Wolf Pack manufactured two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Anguizola walked and he was brought in thanks to Lorenzo's sixth homer of the season to push the lead to 9-1.

Brewton-Parker was unable to put up any runs in the top of the seventh to give Loyola the 9-1 victory and its first win in conference play.

 

Game Two: Loyola 3, Brewton-Parker 8

Anguizola continued to dominate in the second game, going 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Jordan Wilson added the other RBI in game two, while Rosenbohm and Jordan each added a run in the loss.

On the mound, Daniel Posway (SR/Sugarland, Texas) (1-4) got the loss after giving up eight hits and five runs (five earned) in seven innings pitched.

The Barons wasted no time taking the lead in game two, as Ty Kelly took the second pitch he saw over the fence to put Brewton-Parker up 1-0.

The visitors put up one more run in the top of the second to take the 2-0 lead at Segnette.

The score remained 2-0, until Jesse Jordan (FR/New Iberia, La.) came home after a bases-loaded walk to bring the home team within one at 2-1 after five innings.

The Barons manufactured three more runs over the next two innings to bring the score to 5-1 heading in to the eighth.

Rosenbohm led off the eighth with a walk and advanced to second following a wild pitch. Anguizola followed with a triple to score Rosenbohm and bring the score to 5-2. Wilson scored Anguizola from third with a ground out to cut the deficit to 5-3 entering the final inning.

The visitors put up three more runs in the top of the inning to push the advantage to 8-3.

The Wolf Pack were unable to manufacture any runs in the ninth to fall 8-2 in the doubleheader finale.

Loyola will end the series against the Barons tomorrow, March 13, with a single game set to start at 1:00 p.m.
