Looking to win their sixth-straight contest, the No. 25 Loyola University New Orleans Women's Basketball team headed to Faulkner University of Saturday afternoon to faceoff against the Lady Eagles in a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) matchup.
The Wolf Pack shut down Faulkner from the outside - holding the home team to just 19% shooting from beyond the arc – to earn the 67-57 victory on the road.
With the win, Loyola improves to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in the SSAC. The Wolf Pack are the first team in the league to earn seven conference wins this season and join No. 5 Bethel University (6-0) as the only teams without a loss in league play.
Conversely, the Lady Eagles fall to 6-11 on the year and 2-5 in conference action following the loss.
Three Wolf Pack starters scored in double-digits, with Jr. G Kylah Jones(Houston, Texas/Westfield) leading the team with 12 points while Jr. F Meghan Temple (Houston, Texas/Klein) and Sr. G Briana Oglesby(Baton Rouge, La./University Laboratory School) both chipped in with 11 points. Temple also grabbed a game-high 11 boards to record a double-double in a team-high 33 minutes played.
Faith Legate had a huge game for Faulkner on Saturday, tallying a career-high 25 points to go with a team-best nine boards.
Loyola took hold of the game early in the first quarter, jumping out to a 18-4 lead with 4:01 to play. The Lady Eagles cut the deficit to as low as five in the second quarter but a layup by Sr. F Adrianne Sloboh (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal High School) with just four seconds remaining put the visitors up 38-29 after the first 20 minutes of action. The Wolf Pack maintained the double-digit advantage for a majority of the second half, until 9-0 run in the fourth quarter by the Lady Eagles brought the score to 63-55 with just over two minutes to play. Loyola used four free throws by Temple and So. G Zoie Miller (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star High School)down the stretch to seal the 67-57 victory on the road.
The Wolf Pack have a major test ahead of them on Monday, Jan. 18, as they travel to take on (RV) Auburn University at Montgomery at 5:30 p.m.
