Box Score 2 Loyola defeats Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0, before falling to Florida College 0-3.
The Loyola University New Orleans Volleyball team traveled to the state of Florida on Friday to take part in the Hyatt Place Labor Day Volleyfest hosted by Keiser University (Fl.). The Wolf Pack went 1-1 on day one of the two-day tournament, defeating Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 (25-23,25-13,25-10), before falling to Florida College 0-3 (17-25,12-25,17-25).
With the split, Loyola is now 2-4 on the year, winning two of its last three matches.
Match One: Loyola 3, Tennessee Wesleyan 0
After taking the early 1-0 advantage, the Wolf Pack put together a 7-4 run to jump out to an 8-4 lead in set one. With Loyola leading 12-6, the Bulldogs strung together five-straight points to cut the deficit to just one at 12-11. The teams battled back-and-forth before Tennessee Wesleyan scored two-straight points to tie the match at 13-13. The match was tied again at 15-15, before three unanswered Wolf Pack points gave Loyola the slim 18-15 advantage. The Bulldogs quickly answered with a 3-0 run of their own to get within one at 20-19. Despite the late run, the Wolf Pack managed to hold on, scoring the final two points to win the set 25-23.
Tennessee Wesleyan led the second set 2-1 but would not hold the lead for long. Loyola orchestrated an impressive 7-1 run in the middle of the set to jump out to the commanding 17-8 advantage. The Bulldogs were unable to get any closer than eight for the remainder of the set and the Wolf Pack cruised to a 25-13 victory to take the 2-0 set lead.
The third set was more of the same as Loyola jumped out to the early 7-2 lead. The Wolf Pack kept the foot on the pedal, ending the set on an 18-8 run to earn the 25-10 victory in the set to win the first match 3-0.
Sr. OH Eva Allen (Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce) led all players with 12 kills and Fr. S Maddie Huekels (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic) dished out a team-high 13 assists to go along with five digs. So. S Lindsay Ulfig(Saline, Mich./Malone) collected 12 helpers in the win, while Sr. DS/OH Breanna Stevenson (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) led Loyola with six digs.
Match Two: Florida College 3, Loyola 0
Coming out of the USCAA with a 2-0 record, Florida College entered the Countess de Hoernle Student Life Center looking to make it a perfect 3-0 on the season. The Falcons used great serving and crafty net work to take the first set 25-17.
The second set proved much of the same, with Florida College refusing to easy up en route to a 25-12 victory.
Down 2-0, Loyola entered the second set down but not out. The Wolf Pack amped up the intensity and corrected some errors in hopes of pushing the match to another set. Despite their best efforts, the Wolf Pack would drop the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Fr. MB Allison Hartmann (Slidell, La./Pope John Paul II) led Loyola with seven kills, while Huekels dished out a team-high 13 assists and five digs. Ulfig also added five digs and Fr. MB Jordan Davis (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) chipped in with six kills.
Loyola returns to Keiser University tomorrow, September 5, to take on Calumet College of St. Joseph at noon, before closing out the tournament against the host Seahawks at 6:00 p.m. Live stats and video for both games can be found here.
