After falling behind 4-2 in the second inning, Loyola University New Orleans baseball scored three runs in the fifth inning and two in the eighth to defeat the Blue Mountain Toppers. 7-4. today in New Albany, Mississippi. With the win, Loyola takes the three-game series over Blue Mountain two games to one.
Carmelo LoSauro singled to center field in the top of fifth to score John Nicholson and Britt Pellegrin doubled to left to plate LoSauro and Alexander Lorenzo, giving the Pack a 5-4 lead. An Allen Newman single in the top of the eighth brought in two more runs to give Loyola some breathing room.
Kevin Lindsey shut out the Toppers in the final seven innings to earn the complete game win for the Wolf Pack. Lindsey struck out four and allowed four earned runs in nine innings of work.
Loyola (21-22, 8-16 SSAC) took an early lead over Blue Mountain (11-23, 4-18 SSAC) when John Nicholson hit a two-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the first inning. Blue Mountain, however, would score two runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning and two more in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Luis Anguizola went 3-5 today and finishes up the three-game set with seven hits in 11 at bats. Nicholson was 2-3 with two runs scored while Pellegrin had two hits, one run and two RBI. Daniel Pappas, Lance Licciardi, Jordan Wilson, Newman and LoSauro all had one hit each for the Pack.
Dylan Earnest took the loss for Blue Mountain, surrendering six runs and 10 hits in seven innings. Miciah Heard, Brandon Berry, Seth Davis and Thomas Russell had two hits each for the Toppers.
Next up for Loyola is a doubleheader against Louisiana College on Monday, April 6 in Pineville, La. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
