(New Orleans, La.) John Nicholson hit two, two-run home runs tonight for Loyola University New Orleans baseball, but it wasn't enough to beat Auburn Montgomery as the Pack fell 10-7 in Montgomery, Alabama.
Loyola (12-10, 3-7 SSAC) scored first tonight as Brian Reaney singled to left to score Luis Anguizola in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher Joel Buhler pitched a scoreless first inning but struggled to shut down Auburn Montgomery (13-6, 7-0 SSAC) batter after that. AUM scored three runs in the bottom of the second on four hits, and the Wolf Pack was left to play catch up the rest of the ballgame.
Alexander Lorenzo scored on a Anguizola single in the top of the third but the Warhawks scored two in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. Andrew Fournet started off the top of the fourth with a bunt single, and was then driven in by a Lorenzo double. Nicholson then hit his first home run of the night, sending one over the centerfield fence to score both Lorenzo and himself. But the Warhawks once again responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning and the Wolf Pack now trailing 9-5, Nicholson hit his second home run of the night to plate two runs. The Pack moved runners to first and second base in the seventh and nine innings, but was unable to put any more runs on the board.
Buhler took the loss for the Pack, allowing eight earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. Nick Moore pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Matt Miller gave up six earned runs and 12 hits in 5.1 innings, but received enough run support to earn the win for Auburn Montgomery.
Nicholson, Anguizola, Joseph Kuchler and Lance Licciardi all had multi-hit games for Loyola. Anguizola finished 3-4 with one RBI and one run. Nicholson had four RBI and two runs while Lorenzo scored three times and drove in one run.
Six different Warhawks batters had multi-hit games, with Bryan Young leading the way with four hits and three RBI. Darius Reese and Blake Barrow both had solo home runs for Auburn Montgomery.
Loyola and Auburn Montgomery will finish up the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
