(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University baseball team split a doubleheader with Jesuit rival Spring Hill College this afternoon, losing the first game 3-1 before taking down the Badgers 6-5 in the second game
Spring Hill's first batter William Floros homered over the right field fence to bring the Badgers up 1-0 to begin the first game. The Wolf Pack would not get a hit until the bottom of the third inning when Allen Newman singled up the middle, followed by another single up the middle by Rawlings Elam. Both Newman and Elam would get stranded on base and the Wolf Pack would remain scoreless heading into the top of the fourth.
Loyola's only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth off yet another single up the middle by Carmelo Losauro to score Luis Anguizola. Anguizola had reached base on a hard-hit double off the left field fence. The game would remain tied heading into the top of the seventh inning. In the final inning, Spring Hill's first two batters would single and a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Spradlin would put both runners in scoring position. A deep single to left field would bring in two runs for the Badgers, and the Pack were unable to score to end the game.
Campbell took the loss for the Pack in the first game, giving up eight hits and three runs in six inning pitched. Spring Hill's Hunter Nowak earned the win for the Badgers, allowing six hits and only one run against the Pack.
The Badgers (14-7) would go up 1-0 in the top of the first for the second straight game. Alexander Lorenzo would hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second to bring in Britt Pellegrin to tie the game at one going into the third inning. A two RBI double by Spring Hill's Alex Jones brought the Badgers up by two heading into the bottom of the third, but the Pack would respond, as Pellegrin hit a sacrifice fly to bring in John Nicholson. A wild pitch by Nick Moore in the top of the fifth would score Jones, but the Pack would score four runs off four hits in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead 6-5. LoSauro and Lorenzo hit RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to score Newman and Nicholson, while Brian Reaney hit an RBI double to bring in LoSauro. The Badgers would not respond and Nick Moore earned the 6-5 win over Spring Hill.
Dylan Gregoire earned a save in the second game, coming in at the top of the sixth inning, forcing two three-up, three-down innings and collecting two strikeouts.
The Pack (15-11) combined for six RBI on the day, with five coming in the second game. Eight members of the Pack recorded hits on the day, with Lorenzo leading the way for the Pack in the second game, finishing the game with two RBI on three at bats. LoSauro finished the day with two RBI and four hits on seven at bats.
Jones led the way for the Badgers, finishing the day with five RBI on seven at bats. Floros recorded three hits and two runs on four at bats in the first game, while Taylor Eads recorded three hits and three runs on four at bats for the Badgers in the second game.
The Pack will travel to Cochran, Georgia for a three-game series against SSAC opponent Middle Georgia State College on March 20-21.
