(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball was defeated by No. 14 Belhaven in both games of a doubleheader today, falling 1-0 in the first game and 7-2 in the second. With the doubleheader sweep today, Belhaven takes the three-game weekend series over the Wolf Pack two games to one.
The first game of the doubleheader was a true pitching duel between Wolf Pack ace Kevin Lindsey and Belhaven's Chase Davidson. Each pitcher surrendered just three hits, with neither pitcher allowing an earned run. It was Davidson who came out on top in the end, though, as three Wolf Pack errors in the top of the sixth allowed the Blazers to plate the only run of the game.
Loyola (11-8, 3-6 SSAC) threatened in the bottom of the seventh, bringing runners to first and second as Rawlings Elam was walked and John Nicholson was hit by an errant pitch from Zach Osha. Alexander Lorenzo came to the plate with two down and hit a soft line drive into shallow left that looked as if it would find the outfield grass, but Belhaven's James Peterson made a spectacular diving catch to end the Pack's hopes for a comeback. In total, the Wolf Pack left 10 runners on base for the game.
NIcholson, Pappas and Luis Anguizola were the only Loyola batters with a hit in game one. Carmelo LoSauro reached base three times via base on balls.
Paul Pickerell, Hunter Sutton and Will Mullen had the Blazers (13-8, 4-5 SSAC) only hits with Pickerell scoring the game's lone run.
Lindsey took the loss for the Pack, moving to 3-2 on the season. Davidson earns his first win of the season for the Blazers while Osha pitched one inning in relief and earned his first save.
Tanner Moulder earned the win for Belhaven in the second game, pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Moulder moves to 2-1 with the win. Dylan Gregoire is credited with the loss, allowing two runs, both earned, in four innings of work.
Belhaven scored first as Emilio DeSilva hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Gabe Wilson in the top of third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Wolf Pack loaded the bases and Joseph Kuchler drew a walk to score Anguizola and knot the game at one run apiece.
The Blazers scored one more in the top of the fifth and then lit up the Pack for four runs in the sixth. Adam Kowalczyk started things off for the Blazers with a deep home run over the left field wall. That was followed by a walk and three straight Belhaven singles to plate three more runs.
Loyola managed to get one run back in the bottom of the ninth, but it was much too little, too late.
Kuchler and Anguizola both collected two hits with Kuchler driving in one run and Anguizola scoring one.
The Wolf Pack will be back in action on Thursday, March 5 as they host Calumet College (Ind.) in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
