(Hattiesburg, Miss.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball split the series ending doubleheader versus William Carey today, losing the first game 5-4 and taking the second game 4-1.
In the first game loss, the Wolf Pack (10-6, 2-4 SSAC) was undone by fielding errors as all five of the runs surrendered by starting pitcher Kevin Lindsey were unearned. Loyola committed a total of four errors in the game.
The Pack got on the board first as Britt Pellegrin hit a double to deep left field to bring in John Nicholson in the top of the first inning. The Crusaders (10-6, 5-1 SSAC) would respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning and one more in the second. In the top of the third, Loyola rallied to tie the game at four apiece as Nicholson doubled to score Alexander Lorenzo and Luis Anguizola hit a two-run home run over the left field wall.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, a runner at second and the score still tied at four, Anguizola misplayed a ball thrown to first that would have been the third out for the Crusaders. William Carey capitalized on the opportunity as Michael Wells hit a single to shallow center, scoring Tyler Richardson and giving the Crusaders a one run lead. The Wolf Pack was unable to manufacture any runs in the final two innings.
Lindsey (3-1) took the loss for Loyola, striking out four batters and giving up five runs (all unearned) in 5.2 innings of work. Nicholson finished the game 1-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Lorenzo was 2-4 with a run scored while Anguizola finished with 1-3 with one run and two RBI.
Brandt Bourgeois collected the win for the Crusaders, giving up four earned runs and striking out eight in seven innings pitched. Richardson, Wells and Tyler James all had multi-hit games for William Carey.
Dylan Gregoire (3-1) pitched 7.1 innings and allowed just one earned run the second game of the doubleheader, earning the win for the Wolf Pack. Connor Thurman picked up his third save of the season, pitching 1.2 scoreless inning in relief.
The Pack engineered a two-out rally in the third inning, scoring two runs after the first two Loyola batters failed to reach base. Jordan Wilson scored when Larson Barkurn misplayed a grounder, followed by a John Nicholson single, which brought in Rawlings Elam. The Wolf Pack scored again in the top of the fourth as a Joseph Kuchler single brought home Anguizola.
William Carey scored one run in the seventh inning, but an Elam double in the top of the ninth scored Kuchler to bring the Pack lead back up to three, and Thurman worked his way out of a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the ninth to close the game out.
Elam, Lorenzo, Nicholson, Anguizola, Kuchler, Wilson and Carmelo LoSauro all collected hits for the Wolf Pack.
Loyola will host SSAC opponent Belhaven in a three-game series Friday, February 27 and Saturday, February 28. The Wolf Pack and the Blazers will play a single game on Friday at 6 p.m., and a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
