(Hattiesburg, Miss.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball lost the first game of three-game series versus William Carey tonight, 13-3.
The Crusaders (9-5, 4-0 SSAC) jumped on Wolf Pack starting pitcher Joel Buhler from the very beginning, putting three runs on the board on four hits in the first inning. In the top of the third inning, Loyola countered with two runs as Andrew Fournet and Alexander Lorenzo came across thanks to a dropped fly ball by Jordan Anderson.
Buhler pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble again in the bottom of the fourth, surrendering two runs before being relieved by Stewart Campbell. Campbell managed to work his way out of the fourth without allowing any more runs to be scored by the Crusaders. But William Carey added two more runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and finally four more in the seventh and final inning.
Buhler took the loss for the Loyola (9-5, 1-3 SSAC), moving to 0-3 on the season. Gavin Culpepper (2-1) earned the win for William Carey, allowing five hits in six innings and striking out nine.
Britt Pellegrin collected three of Loyola's seven hits tonight. Alexander Lorenzo, Luis Anguizola, Daniel Pappas and Peyton Senner each had a hit for the Wolf Pack with Anguizola being the only member of the Pack to drive in a run.
Every starting Crusader batter had at least one hit tonight, and five totaled at least two hits. Tyler Richardson was 4-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Jordan Anderson was 3-4 with two runs scored.
Loyola and William Carey will finish out the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader, which was originally schedule to begin at 1 p.m. but has since been changed to a 12 p.m. start time.
