(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball fell to Martin Methodist, 12-2, tonight in the final game of their conference-opening three-game series.
Zack Brewer gave up two earned runs with four strikeouts in five innings of work to earn the win for the Redhawks. Brewer improves to 3-0 with the win. Cody Vernon pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the Redhawks (10-1, 2-1 SSAC) to close out the win. Loyola's Dylan Gregoire (2-1) took the loss for the Pack, giving up six earned runs in six innings.
Brewer and Vernon held the Wolf Pack (7-4, 1-2 SSAC) hitters in check for most of the game, as the Pack managed just one run in the fourth and one in the sixth. Senior Carmelo LoSauro drove in both runs for Loyola, hitting a single in the fourth to score John Nicholson and another single in the sixth to bring in Luis Angiuzola.
Angiuzola's run in the sixth brought the Pack within two runs of Martin Methodist, but the Redhawks scored two runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and four more in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
LoSauro and Nicholson accounted for five of Loyola's seven hits, with LoSauro going two for four at the plate and Nicholson finishing three for four.
Austin Schubert, Blake Truett and Zach Bailey all finished with three hits for Martin Methodist. Schubert scored three runs and added two doubles while Caleb Lindsey, Jimbo Ramsey and Seth Staggs totaled two RBI each.
The Wolf Pack will be back in action on Monday, February 16 as they travel to Pineville, La. for a 2 p.m. doubleheader versus Louisiana College.
