(Westwego La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball took one of two games in a doubleheader versus Martin Methodist College tonight, winning the second game of the set to hand the Redhawks their first loss of the season.
In the first game, the Redhawks (9-1, 1-1 SSAC) took advantage of six Wolf Pack (7-3, 1-1 SSAC) errors en route to a 14-4 win. Starter Blake Beavers pitched a complete for the victory. The right hander gave up four runs, three earned, and struck out nine for the win. He improved to 3-0 on the season.
Martin Methodist scored in the first three frames and took advantage of four Wolf Pack errors in the second for a six run inning. In the third, the Redhawks broke the game open with three runs off of hits by Blake Truett, Seth Staggs, and Austin Schubert to take a commanding 10-2 lead.
Staggs led at the plate going 4 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Schubert added three hits and four RBI with Truett and Fergerson contributing two hits each.
Britt Pellegrin and Andrew Fournet each had two hits for Loyola. Fournet also drove in two runs while Pellegrin scored once and drove in one. Joel Buhler (0-2) was tagged with the loss. He went three innings and gave up 10 runs, four earned, on eight hits and walked three. Jordan Green was effective in relief giving up one run on two hits and striking out two in three innings of work.
Wolf Pack starting pitcher Kevin Lindsey (3-0) had a dominating performance in the second game, leading Loyola to a 6-1 victory. Lindsey allowed just one unearned run on five hits and two walks in eight innings. Closer Connor Thurman pitched the final frame to seal the win for the Pack.
Loyola jumped out on top of the Redhawks early, scoring three runs in the first inning to take a quick lead. John Nicholson scored Alexander Lorenzo with a single to center field, and Carmelo LoSauro hit a sacrifice fly to drive in another. The Wolf Pack scored an insurance run in the sixth inning as LoSauro singled up the middle to score Luis Anguizola.
The Redhawks threatened in the top of the eighth inning, loading the bases with just one out. But Lindsey buckled down and retired two straight Hawks' batters to escape the inning with no runs scored.
LoSauro finished the game with three RBI and was 2 for 3 with a double. Lorenzo, Angiuzola and Nicholson all scored two runs for the Pack.
Elliot Bush (1-1) gave up four runs, three earned, in 5.2 innings and took the loss for Martin Methodist.
Loyola and Martin Methodist will play the rubber match of the three game series tomorrow at Segnette Field at 4 p.m.
