No. 13 Loyola bested 73-68 by crosstown rival Dillard on Monday

The No. 13 Loyola New Orleans Women's Basketball team took the short trip across town on Monday to take on Dillard University in a nonconference showdown. Despite holding the Bleu Devils to just 38% shooting from the floor, the Wolf Pack fell inside The Battlefield 68-73 in the cross-town rivalry.

Loyola falls to 1-1 on the year with the loss and Dillard starts the season at 1-0 following the victory.

Dillard jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the game but a triple by Jr GKylah Jones (Houston, Texas/Westfield) knotted the score at 3-3 early. The Bleu Devils scored the next five points to take the 8-3 advantage at home. Down 18-12, Jr. F Meghan Temple (Houston, Texas/Klein)rambled off two-straight buckets and Sr. G Briana Oglesby (Baton Rouge, La./University Laboratory School) followed with two free throws to tie the game at 18-18 with 2:24 to play in the first quarter. Oglesby ended the first quarter with a triple off an assist by So. G Zoie Miller (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star High School) and the score read 23-23 after the first ten minutes.

The second quarter saw five ties and with the score knotted up at 38-38,Temple cleaned up a missed shot to give the Wolf Pack the 40-38 lead with under a minute remaining. A Dillard three pointer with 21 seconds gave the Bleu Devils the slim 41-40 advantage heading into the locker rooms.

The home team held the lead for a majority of the third quarter, building it as big as seven points at the 4:15 mark. Down 50-43, Loyola utilized four different scorers to go on an 11-0 run to go up 54-50 with just 36 seconds remaining in the third. The Bleu Devils quickly regrouped and sank a long triple as the buzzer sounded to cut the deficit to 54-53.

The fourth quarter started off slow with neither team putting any points on the board in the first two minutes. Up 57-56 following a free throw byJones, the Wolf Pack watched Dillard string together six-straight points to take the 61-57 advantage at the 4:58 mark. Miller sank two free throws with just over two minutes to play to cut the deficit to 67-64, before a layup by Temple brought the Wolf Pack within one with under a minute remaining.

The home team ended the game hitting six-of-eight free throws to complete the upset 73-68.

Oglesby led Loyola with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Miller finished with 14 points, five assists and six rebounds, while Temple collected a double-double (12 points and 11 rebounds) in the loss.

The Wolf Pack return to action on Thursday, Nov. 5, to take on DI Tulane University in the "Battle of Freret" at 5:30 p.m.
