Coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 21 Coastal Georgia yesterday, the Loyola University New Orleans Volleyball team returned to the Cramton Bowl Multiplex on Friday to face fourth-seeded Faulkner University on day two of the SSAC Volleyball Championships. The Eagles proved too much on Friday morning, defeating the Wolf Pack 3-0 (25-19,25-19,25-15).
Loyola drops to 16-21 on the year and 0-2 at the SSAC Tournament following the loss. With the win, the Eagles improve to 22-14 overall and 1-1 in the SSAC Championships after losing to Dalton State on day one.
A kill by Fr. MB Jordan Davis (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) got the Wolf Pack on the board first, before the Eagles strung together four-straight points to take the 4-1 lead in set one. Faulkner kept the momentum rolling and extended the advantage to 10-5 following back-to-back Loyola errors. Down five, the Wolf Pack capitalized on Eagle errors to cut the deficit to three, 20-17, late in set one. Faulkner scored four-straight points to make the score 24-17, before back-to-back kills from Sr. OH Eva Allen (Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce) made it 24-19. The Eagles recorded the deciding kill on the next play to earn the 25-19 victory in the first set.
Following a Faulkner error, the Eagles used a 6-0 run to go up 6-1 early in set two. Down 16-9, Loyola used two kills from Allen and one by Fr. SMaddie Huekels (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic) to cut the lead to 16-12. Four would be the closest Loyola would get the remainder of the set and Faulkner claimed the 25-19 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Eagles got on the board first in the third set and never surrendered the lead. Up 17-11, Faulkner scored four-straight points to take the comfortable 21-11 advantage. Allen and So. S Lindsay Ulfig (Saline, Mich./Malone) both recorded kills down the stretch but it would not be enough as the Eagles took the third set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Allen led the Wolf Pack with a game-high 14 kills on 28 attacks (.357) to go along with seven digs. Huekels recorded a game-high 22 assists andFr. S Natavia Mitchell (Austin, Texas/Round Rock) added eight digs in the loss.
Loyola continues play at the SSAC Volleyball Championships today, taking on eighth-seeded Brenau at 3:00 p.m.
