Wrapping up its three-game homestand, the Loyola University New Orleans Volleyball team welcomed DII Spring Hill College to The Den on Monday for a non-conference match. The Wolf Pack fell to the Badgers 3-0 (25-11,25-14,25-18) on Columbus Day in a battle of former conference rivals.
Loyola drops to 13-12 overall with the loss, while Spring Hill improves to 17-6 following Monday's victory.
A block by Fr. MB Jordan Davis (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) tied the first set 1-1 before the Badgers strung together a 4-1 run to go up 5-2. The visitors followed with an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 14-6 which forced the Wolf Pack to call a timeout. Spring Hill kept the pedal down for the remainder of the set, ending set one on a 7-1 run to claim victory 25-11.
Loyola took its first lead of the game early in the second set when a kill byFr. L Anna Katherine Brunini (Madison, Miss./Madison Central) put the Pack up 1-0. With the score tied 3-3, the Badgers put together a 7-1 run to jump out the early 10-4 advantage. A kill by Jr. OH Wren Overesch(Austin, Texas/Austin) brought the score to 10-5 before an 11-2 spurt by the Badgers gave the visitors a comfortable 21-7 lead. Sr. OH Eva Allen(Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce) collected three kills down the stretch but it would not be enough as the Badgers cruised to the 25-14 win.
With the score knotted at 5-5 in the third set, back-to-back kills by Allengave the Wolf Pack their biggest lead of the match at 8-5. Loyola maintained the lead until the Badgers came back to tie the set at 15-15. The score tied again at 17-17, before Spring Hill closed the door with an 8-1 run to claim victory 25-18 to earn the sweep.
Allen led Loyola with seven kills to go along with 12 digs. Fr. S Maddie Huekels (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic) dished out a team-high 14 assists, while So. DS Elizabeth Scioneaux (Reserve, La./East St. John)scooped up 17 digs in the loss.
The Wolf Pack return to the court on Friday, Oct. 16, when they travel for a tri-match at Clark Atlanta University with action starting at 3:00 p.m.
