(Houston, Texas) Loyola University volleyball kicked off the 2014 season at the St. Thomas Labor Day Tournament with a win against St. Gregory's University after falling to tournament host St. Thomas University earlier in the day.
Opening the day, the Wolf Pack fell to tournament host University of St. Thomas in five sets 21-25, 25-22, 24-26, 27-25, 13-15. Junior Eva Allen shined on offense with 18 kills, and senior Lauren Brand contributed 13. Sophomore Katie Philippi led the Pack's defensive effort with 11 digs, while senior Becca Burnett and sophomore Daniela Leal both tallied 10. Leal also garnered 38 of the team's 42 assists.
The squad ended the day on a high note with a win against St. Gregory's University. The Pack came from behind to win in four sets 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. Allen led the offense with 15 kills, while Brand chipped in with 10. The Pack showcased a stellar defensive performance, garnering 68 total digs and 6 team blocks. Philippi led the defense with 20 digs, and Leal and Burnett added 13 and 11 respectively. Leal also contributed 28 assists in the win.
Loyola will conclude tournament action tomorrow as they take on Texas College at 9 a.m. followed by Oklahoma Wesleyan University at 3 p.m.
