New Orleans, La.- Keiva Council had a career high 31 points, but it was not enough as Belhaven University defeated Loyola University New Orleans 73-64 in women's basketball Saturday afternoon in The Den.
Belhaven led the entire game with Jessica Barlow scoring on the Blazers first possession. The lead quickly grew to 8-0 with back to back three pointers from Sarah Carr.
Loyola closed the gap to two points with a pair of free throws by Jasmine Brewer at the 14:48 mark. Belhaven answered with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes that was capped by a Carr jumper.
The Wolfpack whittled away the Blazer lead to four points with Megan Berner capitalizing on a Belhaven turnover at 4:27. Belhaven closed out the half with a 11-2 run for a 32-19 lead at the break.
The Blazer lead remained in double figures for much of the second half before Council sparked a late run. The junior from Houston scored 10 unanswered points to cut the Blazer lead to four with 1:55 to play.
Regina Jackson pushed the margin to seven points with a three pointer for Belhaven and Carr converted two free throws to push it to nine points. The Blazers made 4 of 6 free throws in the last 34 seconds to secure the win.
Council led all scorers converting 9 of 21 from the field and 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Jasmine Brewer had a double-double 21 points and 10 rebounds. It was her third consecutive double-double.
For Belhaven (14-5, 3-1 SSAC), Regena Jackson had a double-double of her own with 22 points and 11 assists. Carr had 14 and Kiara Johson added 10.
Loyola (13-6, 2-1 SSAC) returns to action on Thursday, January 27 at William Carey. Tip off in Hattiesburg is slated for 5:30 p.m.
