Loyola volleyball falls to West Alabama

The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team traveled to Pruitt Hall on Tuesday night to take on NCAA Division-II University of West Alabama and were defeated 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 9-25).

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team traveled to Pruitt Hall on Tuesday night to take on NCAA Division-II University of West Alabama and were defeated 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 9-25).

Gina Gill finished with 10 kills and has now scored double-digit kills in all 10 Loyola matches so far. Kailey Tuthill tallied eight kills with Sabrina Stansberry adding six. Samantha Worsham had 13 assists and Amanda Oldani led with 10 digs.

The first set was closely contested until the Tigers took advantage of three Loyola errors to grab an 11-7 lead. The 'Pack responded by scoring the next five points, starting with kills from Tuthill and Gill. Gill then teamed up with Stansberry for a block to put Loyola up 12-11, forcing a UWA time out. Following the break, the teams battled to a 20-20 tie, but the Tigers held Loyola to only one point the rest of the way as the took the opening set 25-21.

The Maroon and Gold jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead after a kill by Gill in set two. Following a couple ties, UWA went up 6-5 on a kill and kept Loyola at a slight disadvantage until an ace by Tuthill knotted the game at 18-18. With the score at 23-22 UWA, the Tigers used a kill and a Wolfpack error to win the set and take a 2-0 lead.

West Alabama (2-2), looking to extend their home winning streak to nine matches, dominated the early going of the third set, playing to a 7-1 lead. An ace by Oldani cut the deficit to 11-7, but the Tigers then put the game out of reach with a 13-2 run. Loyola managed one more point before falling 25-9 as they were shutout for the first time this season.

Loyola (5-5) opens up their home schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 14 against conference-rival Spring Hill. First serve at The Den is slated for 7 P.M.
