Loyola errors costly in SSAC Volleyball Tourney, Wolfpack eliminated

Loyola University New Orleans women's volleyball was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament by Southern Wesleyan University 17-25, 12-25, 18-25 Friday afternoon.

Gulfport, Miss.- Loyola University New Orleans women's volleyball was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament by Southern Wesleyan University 17-25, 12-25, 18-25 Friday afternoon at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Gymnasium.

Loyola, the second seed from the west division, had a hitting percentage of .007 in the match, their lowest of the season. The Wolfpack committed 28 attack errors and seven service errors.

In the first set, Loyola led 6-3 before the Warriors scored eight of the next nine points to take an 11-7 lead. Loyola cut the margin to 11-10, but SWU answered with seven of the next eight to take commanding 18-11 lead before winning the set 25-17.

In the second set, the Warriors ran off eight unanswered points early to take control 10-2. SWU closed out the set winning nine of the last 11 points.

In the third and final set, the teams were knotted at 13-13 before the Warriors scored the next four points, two off of Wolfpack attacking errors. Loyola cut the margin to 17-15 with a pair of Gina Gill kills. SWU responded and scored four consecutive en route to winning the final set 25-18.

For Loyola, Gina Gill led with 12 kills. Kathryn Johnson had a team high 14 digs.

For SWU (20-12), Tierza Rangel led the attack with 12 kills and Kayla Propes added 11. Keni Abercrombie had a game high 28 digs. Southern Wesleyan, the third seed in the east division, had a hitting percentage of .274 on the match.

Loyola's season concludes with a 25-14 record. 25 wins is the most victories since the 2007 when the Wolfpack finished with a 28-12 record.
