Drew Goff enters his sixth season as head coach of Loyola's men's and women's golf teams after elevating the program to new heights in each of his first five seasons.
Golfers of both teams earn All-American status under Goff's leadership during his fifth season at Loyola, as Carter Nicholson was picked from the men's team while Madison Bates, Alejandra Bedoya Tobar and Callee Breland all received the national honor on the women's team. The women's team also recorded its best finish at the NAIA National Championship this season, taking home seventh out of 30 teams, and Madison Bates finished 12th at the Championship for the best individual finish in program history. Nicholson and Bates each individual titles this season, too, as Bates finished the year with two under her belt. The women's team also won one tournament this season, finished third at the SSAC Championship, and advanced to the program's third-straight National Championship as a team.Â
The two teams continued their upward trajectory in Goff’s fourth season, before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season. The women’s golf team rose up in the rankings to No. 9 nationally before the shutdown, winning two of its six tournaments. Madison Bates earned the team’s only individual medalist honor during the team’s first win of the season at the Martin Methodist RedHawk Invitational in October. In the team’s second win at the Georgetown College Gulf Shores Invitational in March, Loyola had four players in the Top 10 to finish the largest comeback in school history. Loyola trailed the first-place team by eight strokes after Day 1 then shot a 12-over, 300 on Day 2 to win the tournament by 12 strokes.Â
On the men’s side, Carter Nicholson earned a medalist honor, taking first place at the Martin Methodist RedHawk Invitational to match Bates. Nicholson was also named to the LSWA All-Louisiana Second Team, while Bates earned LSWA Honorable Mention honors.Â
In his third season, Goff was named Women's Golf Coach of the Year by both the Southern States Athletic Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. In his third year with the program, he coached four student-athletes to SSAC All-Conference status, including Daria Delfino, who also was named to the NAIA All-American First Team. After winning three tournament titles, including the SSAC Championship, the Wolf Pack women's team reached a ranking of eighth, its best poll position in program history, before placing ninth overall at the 2019 NAIA National Tournament.Â
He also coached Philip Nijoka, who made the NAIA All-American Second Team, LSWA Second Team, and SSAC All-Conference Team, while qualifying as an individual at the NAIA National Tournament for the second-straight year.Â
During the 2017-18 season, he guided the women's team to their first appearance in the NAIA Top 25 rankings following their victory at the Coastal Georgia Invitational, the third team title in program history. They later finished the season in 17th place, after placing 17th at the NAIA National Championships, while Philip Nijoka reached the men's national tournament as an individual qualifier after winning three individual titles.Â
In the 2016-17 season, Goff helped guide the men's team to their lowest tournament score in program history at the SSAC Championships. On the women's side, he coached the first student-athlete in program history to earn an invite to the NAIA National Championship in Julchen Narwark.
Goff joined Loyola in 2016 after spending four years as an assistant professional at the New Orleans Country Club.
He was no stranger to the Southern States Athletic Conference, as he was a member of the William Carey golf team from 2007-09. Goff served as team captain for the Crusaders during his senior year and was named All-GCAC and All-Region XIII during the 2007-08 season.
After graduating from William Carey with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Goff took the position as head golf professional at the Covington Country Club where he spent two years before taking the head golf professional job at NOCC.
A native of Lucedale, Miss., Goff is a Class A PGA Professional and has numerous professional victories including the 2015 Gulf States PGA Professional Championship which earned him a spot in the 2016 PGA Professional National Championship as well as the Sanderson Farms Classic on the PGA Tour.
He started his collegiate career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he was a member of the golf team while earning an Associate of Arts degree. During his time with the Bulldogs, Goff earned All-Region and All-State honors.
