NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's golf team took a break from its normal stroke play tournament schedule to play a match play event at Bayou Oaks at City Park. The Wolf Pack took on Southeastern Louisiana and the University of New Orleans in two separate rounds, falling in both competitions to their NCAA Division I counterparts.
Cole Haase had the highlight of the day during his morning match. After falling behind by two after five holes, he hit the pin on his approach on the sixth hole to easily make birdie and get within one hole of his Southeastern opponent. The highlight came on the next hole, though, as the freshman carded an ace on the par-3 seventh hole from 176 yards out to tie the match. The two remained tied until Haase took the lead on the 13th hole. Another birdie on the 15th put Haase up two, and he closed out the match on the 17th green with another par.
Cristobal Salome, Arthur Mijic and Trey Ponce all lost by two holes during the morning match, as Salome led for most of his round until his SELA opponent won the final three holes to earn the win. Mijic trailed by as many as four, but an eagle on the 11th and a birdie on the 12th helped him get back to within one. His counterpart made par on the final four holes to seal that win, however. Ponce trailed for most of his match, too, but he stayed within one or two holes before his match ended on the 17th hole.
Ponce and Mijic earned wins during the afternoon round against UNO. Ponce trailed by one for most of the front nine, but he tied the match on the par-3 seventh before using back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes to go ahead by two. He never trailed after that, and a birdie on the 16th sealed the win. Mijic, on the other hand, grabbed a lead after the first hole and never trailed in his match. The UNO counterpart tied the match three different times throughout the round, but the senior fended him off to win the match.
Cameron Bruce and Haase narrowly lost their afternoon matches by one, which allowed the Privateers to earn the win over the Wolf Pack.
