Cross Country competes at Nicholls Saturday

The Wolf Pack men’s cross country team outshined five NCAA Division I programs

THIBODAUX, La. – The Wolf Pack traveled to Thibodaux for the Nicholls State Invitational on Saturday. Loyola competed against NAIA programs in Dillard and Texas A&M-Texarkana and NCAA Division I teams, including Southeastern Louisiana, Southern University, and Nicholls State. The Loyola men ran the 4-mile race, while the Wolf Pack women contended in the 5-kilometer contest.
 

The Wolf Pack cross country season will continue when it hosts the Loyola Triangular meet on Friday, Oct. 4 in Marrero, La.


The Loyola women ran well on Saturday, finishing second among the NAIA teams in Thibodaux and seventh among the fourteen competing teams. The team scored 223 points, finishing behind Texas A&M-Texarkana in the NAIA standings, while beating out Division I programs in Alcorn State, Southern University, and Jackson State.


Jasmine Martinez was the first to finish for Loyola, earning a 20:33.90 time and 35th place out of 96 runners. Holly Hedrick was next up for the Pack, getting 47th place with a time of 21:16.30. Ending the race in 52nd and 54th, Sophia Freeze and Kinslie Badon completed the race with times of 21:41.30 and 21:49.78. Emma Meneses and Caitlyn Summers finished the race back-to-back in 57th and 58th places, earning 22:05.07 and 22:13.23 times. Madison Leishman, Sarah Haas, and Briana Bradley helped Loyola secure its seventh-place finish, getting 68th, 77th, and 79th places for times of 23:48.29, 24:55.54, and 25:29.57, respectively.
 

The Wolf Pack men showed out on Saturday, earning a fourth-place team finish among fifteen teams. Loyola finished first among all NAIA teams with a score of 139 while also beating out five NCAA Division I programs in Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern, Alcorn State, and Jackson State. Loyola was only passed by Alabama, the University of New Orleans, and Tulane in the standings.


Drake Breland led the charge with a 23rd-place finish, which placed him second among NAIA athletes. Breland's 21:18.84 time in the four-mile run enters as the fifth-best performance in program history. Jace Luckoski also achieved a spot in the record book, earning 26th place in the race for a time of 21:26.18, putting his performance in at the sixth-best spot in the record book. In 30th place, Connor Meigs completed the race for a 21:36.20 time, earning the seventh-best time in program history for the four-mile run. Jacob Kennedy also notched a spot in the record book with a time of 22:01.44, which earned him the 10th-best spot in program history along with 33rd place in the race.


Evon Gocan and Joseph Medina also ran well in Saturday's meet, getting 42nd and 47th places, recording times of 22:22.01 and 23:04.79, respectively. Jacob Mullis and Cameron Loubat got in on the action, finishing in 50th and 57th places, logging times of 23:13.72 and 23:35.67. Loyola's next runner to reach the finish line was Alex Medina, getting 62nd place and a 23:58.52 time. Earning times of 24:33.84 and 24:53.35, freshmen Carter Scheuermann and Bryce Darensbourg completed the race in 71st and 76th places. Locking in Loyola's seventh-place team finish, Daniel Miller and Elijah Reeves received 79th and 84th places for times of 25:16.75 and 25:59.22, respectively.
