WESTWEGO – The Loyola Wolf Pack baseball team played their first of four non-conference games this week on Tuesday, defeating Dillard University, 11-3, at Segnette Field. The 14th-ranked Pack (23-10, 9-3 SSAC) will now host No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett for a three-game series starting on Friday.Â
Â
The Wolf Pack used a few crooked number innings to pull away from the Bleu Devils, scoring three in the third, two in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead. Mitchell Cope picked up his third win of the season after throwing the fourth inning, as eight different Wolf Pack hurlers saw action. Joshua Orr started by pitching the first two innings, then Reid Perkins pitched the third before Brady Bowen, Jackson Sloan, Andrew Riedell, Matthew Weil and Grant Goodbee followed Cope in order.Â
Â
Tyler Hopkins led things off with a walk, and it appeared Dillard was going to get out of the inning without any damage when the defense turned a double play a few batters later. However, Tucker Ganley walked with two outs and put two on, then a double steal play gave Loyola a 1-0 lead. Cole Romero tripled during the next at-bat to score another, 2-0, and Anthony Fernandez brought home another run, 3-0, with a single.Â
Â
The Pack brought home two more runs two innings later, as Fernandez and Luke Clement each recorded RBI doubles to extend the lead to 5-0. In the sixth, Aaron Davis and Mooney started the frame with back-to-back doubles to take a 6-0 advantage, then a single by Ganley brought the score to 7-0. Ganley later came home on a wild pitch, 8-0, and Jake Mills reached on a fielder's choice to plate another run, 9-0.Â
Â
The Bleu Devils finally pushed a couple of runs across in the top of the eighth, 9-3, but the Pack tacked on two more runs in the bottom half to really put the game away. Ryan Smilari scored on a passed ball after stealing two bases to get to third, and Nathan Monceaux brought home Loyola's final run with a double off the wall.Â
