LOUDON, Tenn. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's golf team pulled an upset in the first round of the Faulkner Eagle Match Play Invitational on Monday, as the Wolf Pack and seven other teams participated in the eight-team tournament at Tennessee National in Loudon, Tennessee.
Playing as the No. 7 seed, the Wolf Pack defeated No. 2 seed Tennessee Wesleyan 3-2 to move on to the tournament's semifinals. Loyola and No. 6-seed Faulkner played next, but that match did not finish on Monday and will resume Tuesday morning before the third and final round begins.
The Wolf Pack pulled the upset in the first round thanks to the play of Gabriel Porges, Logan Peterson and Arthur Mijic, who all pulled out wins to help the team advance. Porges and Peterson both earned 4 UP wins over their TWU counterparts, as both Loyola golfers held leads of at least 3 UP or better for the majority of their matches. While Mijic won his match 3 UP as well, he held a two-hole lead after the 14th hole before winning that hole to set himself up for another point for the Pack. Trey Ponce lost a narrow match 1 DOWN and Chase Venn had a tough day during his first round of the tournament, losing 7 DOWN.
