(Baton Rouge, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball is starting to make a habit out of taking down NCAA Division I opponents. The Wolf Pack earned a 7-3 win over NCAA Division I Southern University in the first game of a doubleheader in Baton Rouge today. The Pack has now defeated two NCAA Division I opponents this season after beating the University of New Orleans 8-4 on March 24. Loyola dropped the second game of today's doubleheader by a score of 7-2.
With the first game of today's doubleheader tied at three apiece in the top of the sixth inning, freshman Jordan Wilson stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single to center field, giving the Wolf Pack a 5-3 lead. Carmelo LoSauro scored from third base and Britt Pellegrin scored from second on Wilson's single.
Loyola (22-23) added two insurance runs, one in the eighth and one in the ninth, but as it turns out, they wouldn't need it. Daniel Posway came in to relieve starter Kevin Lindsey in the bottom of the sixth and shut down the Jaguars for four straight innings. Posway surrendered just three hits and no runs, ensuring the Wolf Pack victory and earning his first save of the season.
Lindsey gave up five hits and three runs, two earned, in five innings of work. He is credited with the win and moves to 6-5 on the year.
Loyola jumped out to a quick three run lead over the Jaguars, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Luis Anguizola singled to right field to score Rawlings Elam, Carmelo LoSauro followed that up with a double to left field to bring in Anguizola and finally Alexander Lorenzo slapped a single left to score LoSauro.
Southern (11-19) scored once in the bottom of the fourth and two more times in the fifth to make it an even 3-3 game before Wilson's single in the sixth gave the lead back to the Pack.
Elam, LoSauro, Pellegrin, Lorenzo, Wilson and Joseph Kuchler all had multi-hit games for the Wolf Pack. Pellegrin went 3-5 with two runs scored while Wilson drove in three runs. As a team, the Pack had a total of 15 hits.
James Fontenot took the loss for the Jaguars, allowing six runs in eight innings pitched.
In Loyola's 7-2 loss in the second game of today's doubleheader, the Pack was simply unable to turn scoring opportunities into actual runs, leaving nine total runners on the basepaths. Southern struck first in this one, scoring one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead.
Loyola got one back in the sixth when John Nicholson scored from third off of a wild pitch, and a Carmelo LoSauro single in the top of the eighth brought in Rawlings Elam to cut Southern's lead to just one run. But the Jaguars scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth to increase their lead to five runs, and the Pack was unable to mount any sort of comeback in the top of the ninth.
Stewart Campbell pitched well in the starting position for Loyola, surrendering just three runs, two earned, in six innings, but is still hit with the loss. He moves to 3-5 on the season.
Elam was a perfect 2-2 while Wilson, Lorenzo, LoSauro, Anguizola and Mick Dubic all had one hit each.
Tyler Robinson earns the win for Southern, striking out four and giving up one earned run in seven innings.
Marcus Tomlin and Robinson Mateo led the Jaguars with two hits and two RBI each.
Loyola will wrap up the three-game series against Southern tomorrow with a home game at Barrow Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
