(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball used a big third inning Tuesday night to defeat NCAA Division I opponent University of New Orleans, scoring six runs in the third on the way to a 8-4 victory over the Privateers.
New Orleans (8-16) opened up the scoring tonight with one run in the bottom of the first inning while the Wolf Pack remained hitless through the first two innings. In the third inning, however, Loyola's bats came to life.
The Wolf Pack (18-18) started the inning off with consecutive singles by Britt Pellegrin, Lance Licciardi and Jordan Wilson to load the bases with no outs. Rawlings Elam then grounded into a fielders choice at shortstop to score Pellegrin and tie the game at one apiece. Next up for the Pack was Allen Newman, who reached first on catcher's interference, loading the bases once again. John Nicholson then drove a hit to left field, bringing in both Licciardi and Elam to score to give the Pack a 3-1 lead. A Carmelo LoSauro sacrifice fly scored Newman to add to the Wolf Pack lead, and an Alexander Lorenzo single drove in two more runs to finish up the scoring for the Pack in the third inning and give Loyola a 6-1 lead over the Privateers.
New Orleans managed to score one run in the bottom of the fourth off of a Loyola fielding error, cutting the Pack lead down to four runs. The Wolf Pack responded with another run of their own in the top of fifth as a Luis Anguizola single drove in Nicholson from second before the Privateers added two more in the bottom of the inning to trim the Pack lead to three, 7-4.
But that would be as close as New Orleans would get to Loyola's lead for the rest of the game as the Pack added a run in the eighth inning and Connor Thurman closed the game out with five scoreless innings on the mound to put away the Privateers for good.
Thurman earned the win for the Pack, moving to 2-0 on the season. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out four in five innings of work. Nick Halliday took the loss for New Orleans, surrendering three earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
Loyola finished the game with 13 team hits as four different Pack batters had a multi-hit game. Nicholson, Lorenzo and Pellegrin had two hits each while Anguizola totaled three hits. Lorenzo drove in three runs, Nicholson drove in two and scored twice and Anguizola collected one RBI and two runs scored. Nicholson's double was the lone extra base hit for Loyola.
Next up for the Pack is a three-game homestand versus SSAC opponent Mobile on Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28. Loyola and Mobile will play one game on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
